All baby cots must meet the appropriate mandatory safety standards. However, there are many key factors that determine the experience you will have over the next few years with babies sleeping in their cot.
Buying a baby cot is very different from buying any other furniture as the new baby spends up to 67% of the first year sleeping. Following are a few points to consider to assist you in your buying decision for your new baby cot:
1: Cheaper cots may meet the standards, but they are always made to meet a certain price, meaning the timber will be as thin as allowable. Remember what happens once baby can jump! Often the first sign of jumping will be when baby stands up against the cot side and needing attention. Will the cot sustain being used as a trampoline? Note different timber types. Straight grain timber is stronger than knotty timber. Hardwood is stronger than soft wood. Pine is considered a soft wood, whereas ash and oak are a stronger timber. Always ask what type of timber is used.
2: Solid colours or white paint do not like being hit with toys or being used as a teething tool. There is more chance of paint “chipping” on solid painted furniture. Natural timber colours or stains will always look nicer for a longer period.
3: Some cots look nice online, but you cannot check the quality in a picture. Some points to consider when buying are:
- What is the thickness of timbers used on the base section underneath the mattress.
- Avoid a wire base as you can have issues later with springs sagging. Always choose a timber base.
- Thickness of the four corner posts, if the cot has them.
- Thickness of the end sections.
- Thickness of the side slats or dowels.
- Thickness of the top and bottom rail.
- Does the cot feel wobbly?
- How heavy is the cot? The heavier, the stronger it will be.
- What warranty is offered?
- Check the reviews available for the cot of your choice.
