How to choose a maternity pillow

Bump up your comfort.

As your bump grows, getting comfortable can become a little harder. Your usual pillows may no longer give you the support you need, and suddenly you're rearranging half the bed just to find a position that feels right.

If this is your first pregnancy, it can be hard to know what you'll need… especially when your body is still changing. You can't always predict which kind of support will feel best in a few weeks’ or months’ time until you try it.

So when choosing a maternity pillow, look for one that gives you flexibility, support and comfort through pregnancy and beyond. Here's what to look for.

Three things to look for in a maternity pillow

  1. Flexibility

Your comfort needs can change throughout each stage of pregnancy (and beyond). What feels good now may not be what you want in the final weeks, and you may not know what you'll prefer until you try it.

Look for a maternity pillow that gives you multiple ways to use it, so you can adjust your setup as your body changes. Rather than committing to one fixed shape, you want the freedom to find what feels right for you.

  2. Support where you need it

A growing bump can change the way you sleep and rest. You may want support around your bump, between your knees, behind your back or throughout your whole body - and you may want different levels of support at different times.
A good maternity pillow should let you position the support where it feels most useful, rather than making you work around a fixed shape.

As pregnancy progresses, you may also find side sleeping more comfortable. From 28 weeks, Australian guidance recommends going to sleep on your side rather than on your back. A maternity pillow can help make side sleeping more comfortable by supporting your bump and legs and helping you settle into a supported position.

For personalised advice about sleeping positions during pregnancy, speak with your healthcare practitioner.

  3. Use beyond pregnancy

Your need for comfort doesn't end when your baby arrives.

In those early postpartum weeks, you're recovering while spending long periods holding and feeding your baby. Look for a pillow that can ergonomically support your arms and body during breastfeeding or bottle feeding to help reduce strain and discomfort.

The more useful your pillow is beyond pregnancy, the more it can become part of your transition into parenthood.

And two things to avoid:

  1. Choosing a bigger pillow when what you really need is more flexibility

A larger pillow isn't automatically a better pillow.

Full-body designs can feel wonderfully supportive, but a very large or bulky pillow can take up a lot of space in your bed and make it harder to move, reposition or find the configuration that feels right for you.
Think about whether you want one fixed shape, or the ability to create your own.

  2. Choosing a pillow you'll outgrow

Your maternity pillow may start as a way to get more comfortable during pregnancy, but your need for support doesn't end when your baby arrives.

If a pillow is too large, bulky or rigid, if a pillow is too large, bulky or rigid, it may not be as useful beyond pregnancy, particularly when you’re spending longer periods holding your baby and looking for comfortable, ergonomic support for your back, arms and neck.

Instead, look for something versatile enough to transition with you, from pregnancy and side sleeping to postpartum.

In short, choose comfort that can follow you into the next chapter.

Two versatile support pillows give you the freedom to create the comfort that feels right for you. Use them separately for targeted support exactly where you need it, or use the connecting pillowcase to create a full-body pillow that gently hugs your body.

Depending on what feels right, you might use them:

  • Around your bump as it grows

  • Between your knees and under your belly while side sleeping

  • Behind your back for additional support

  • For parental ergonomic support while feeding

  • Gentle support for baby as they get stronger during tummy time

As well as:

  • Separately to support different areas at once

  • Together when you want that full-body support

As your body chang
es, so can the
Haven. You don't have to lock in the ‘right’ configuration before you’ve experienced each stage and its associated needs. Rearrange the pillows, change where you need support and create the setup that feels most comfortable for you at each stage.

The Haven Maternity Support Pillow can be personalised in the details as well. The included conjoining cover brings the two pillows together with a soft, considered finish, while optional individual beige covers allow each pillow to be styled separately.

The BabyRest Haven Maternity Support Pillow is designed to carry you through pregnancy and postpartum.

Made for the bump. Loved beyond.

The great news is that when baby arrives, the Haven Maternity Support Pillow doesn't have to be packed away with your maternity clothes.

The same versatile pillows can be reconfigured to support your arms and body while breastfeeding or bottle feeding, helping you find an ergonomic and comfortable position for those longer feeds. Use them together or separately, depending on what feels right, then keep them close by for the rest of your fourth trimester.

The configuration that feels right for pregnancy may not be the one you reach for during a feed, and what you want during a middle-of-the-night feed may be different again during the day, so flexibility matters.
